The demo of Zelda HD at this year's E3 was stunning, and showed the Wii U controller used as a virtual rucksack for Link, but Zelda boss Eiji Aonuma has bigger ambitions for the touch screen controller than just holding bombs and Deku sticks.
Aonuma spoke to Nintendo Power about potential uses for the controller, though nothing concrete was revealed, of course:
With The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, we had the Nunchuck and Wii Remote sort of stand in for the sword and shield that Link carries. But in a game for the Wii U, I can definitely see something like the controller itself becoming the different items that Link is using, allowing you to interact with the game world and with the game items in a very different way.
Aonuma has put a lot of thought into the physical composition of the playing space though, something that could potentially be vital to the Zelda experience on Wii U:
Unlike the Nintendo DS, there’s distance between the television and you and your other screen. That really allows for some different interactions, some of which you saw [at E3]. For example, imagine having the contents of Link’s satchel available to you on the screen of your controller, and using elements of the pouch to interact with gameplay on the television.
Whatever Aonuma and his team is cooking up, we can't wait to see it.

could be things like the letter sorting game at dragon roost island=ww aim with tab and flick letter with fingers.that type of stuff will be new and cool
Woah there, Aonuma! I'm still waiting for the release of Skyward Sword. Bring that out, let me finish it, then we can talk about the Wii U Zelda.
"Unlike the Nintendo DS, there’s distance between the television and you and your other screen. That really allows for some different interactions, some of which you saw [at E3]. For example, imagine having the contents of Link’s satchel available to you on the screen of your controller..."
So yeah, the extra distance between the screens is in really good use here!
I'm thinking of something like the bow/slingshot/grapple/view gyro controls on OoT3D. Instead of showing Link over the target on the WiiU controller you simply show what you're aiming at in something like first person (but say, from a "window" just infront of Link instead of from Link's eyes) and a target in the center. The main screen shows Link in third person aiming at whatever he's aiming at.
...... and maybe some cool new item or something
^that would be cool and new and possibly hip and funky
I love the idea of no HUD on screen and all on the controller. This would make the game look amazing and offer a deeper immersion than every other Zelda game.
use the wii u controller as the slingshot! You can sim using the controller!
All I want to do is to play with minimal effort, no more useless gimicking please. I'm in the very opposite pole of these liking the barbaric kinetic, the Wiimote was already traumatic enough, please, dont make things even worse.
I was thinking this from the beginning. You click on your slingshot, hold up the controller, aim your shot, and pull back the onscreen slingshot to shoot. You could also pull back in different directions to aim more precisely.
treasure chest music plays
"You got the Bladed Discus! Throw the Wii U controller at the screen to slice through multiple enemies at once with this powerful projectile!"
@Mandoble
Couldn't agree more. But unlike the Wiimote and Kinect, I actually see a lot of potential with the Wii U. Even if the screen is used for nothing more than the inventory or a map screen, it's still adding to the experience and making things easier.
I loved that in Crystal Chronicles, each player would use their GBA as a map screen and would get different information on it to share with others. It really promoted team worked and made it show the game itself didn't need a massive HUD.
Throw Wii U controller at screen like it's a boomerang
Wait, Link actually has a satchel?
And I thought his stuff just appears out of nowhere.
There are no ways to make the gaming experience "better". Just let me play in the fashion old way with bumpers, sticks and buttons.
Aim with the gyroscope n' and flick the screen to shoot ... I think a lot of people forget skyawrd sword isn't out yet
Just give us games for the classic controller Pro and make the usage of the new controller optional. No third party will want to enslave the gameplay of their games to a new gimick device and so make these games not portable to other consoles or PC. Inventory and maps dont need to be in a separate screen, if they are there too, then fine, just as an option.
Let Nintendo do this, I'm sure they will come up with the coolest idea ever.
I'm sure Nintendo will come up with a use, but I'm fine w/ the Nunchuk/Wiimote combo. As far as I'm concerned, have both methods for those that want no HUD and the satchel on the screen, and those that don't mind HUD and want some Wiimote sword slashing. Just my 2 cents.
Two words: Tingle Tuner!!!!
as a person who doesnt complain about any new ways of playing
i say bring on the ideas, always ready to try and adapt since i aint lazy lol
you take the awesomeness of hiding into your gba when playing four swords adventures, and multiply it by 100
can't wait
Love the idea of the "virtual rucksack", although that seems more obvious than revolutionary. As long as I don't have to draw any sort of path on the controller I don't mind what they come up with.
Sounds interesting...
I like all these comments
I hope most Wii U games just use the controller to minimize the HUD. I don't want to see any gameplay similar to what I've experienced on the DS. Keep the touching to a minimum and let me focus my attention on one screen.
I'm sure whatever they do, it'll be awesome. I only hope that they throw in a LOT of new items to mix things up, or change some gameplay mechanics.
i'm with melo man... i think nintendo has weaned a lot of people off of dual analog and to not include motion plus and nunchuck controls in any game would be a step backward... be innovative with this new controller... but don't forget the Wii remote... there's still plenty of games that weren't made for the wii that I expected... like a motion Plus Starwars game... a boxing game where you use 2 motion plus controllers per person... i mean these are ideas I had before the wii was even released... no one has even tried ... i think the Wii U (as cool as the wii is) could have the potential to be everything the Wii wassupposed to be and more!
@BluTyGer: I thought he kept his items in his hat.
Aonuma and his team, are, cookin', up, trouble.
He's got a new game, not out on, the, double.
Join me next time for Silly Songs with Larry.
@maggots: I agree somewhat here. While I'm a bit excited about Skyward Sword I'm also worried that my arms are gonna feel pain, especially after playing Red Steel 2. I don't mind playing with buttons, but I can't stand dual analog games. All those FPS that were announced or whatever at E3 would be terrible without the Wii Remote / Nunchuk combo.
What I want to see is something better, not something different. I've never bothered with the DS Zelda games because I couldn't stand the touch screen only controls. They were imprecise, uncomfortable, awkward and annoying. Same goes for Star Fox Command. Nintendo tried to do something different, and came up with something worse.
@TheDarkness... I agree... those touchscreen controls for zelda were not very good at all... i mean doing touch screen puzzles? yes... !... BOOMERANG TRAJECTORIES...! COOL!... Walking like an idiot? ... no thanks... same with harvest moon... ... I mean imagine battlefield 3 with Wii remote & nunchuck!!!... or if they make another metroid prime? .. I'm sure as heck not going to want to play a new metroid prime with Dual analog that's for sure!!!
I've thought long and hard about this, and all I could come up with is...
-Carrying a bucket of water over a tightrope :/
-Holding the controller up to the TV and using it as a sort of lense of truth
-Controlling a second character through a puzzle (think Medli or the Dominion Rod statues)
-two handed shield?
Thing is it might turn out that the Wii remote and nunchuck work better, we'll have to see how good Skyward Sword is.
Stop thinking and considering, start developing. Too many blah blah news these days.
Some idea's I'm interested in seeing implemented:
Using the WiiU controller as a gyroscope sensor just like the 3DS OoT for aiming items.
Flicking bombs from your WiiU controller in the direction you want them to travel and they will appear on the top screen the angle you flicked them.
If anything I can see this controller just opening up a lot of new puzzle idea's for the Zelda games and that alone can excite me about this controller. The puzzle aspect is the most exciting part of the games for me
Theres definitely item potential with the controller but as for the game itself is better suited with the nunchuck style play but knowing Nintendo there probably gonna give us both controller options.
I dont' like holding the controller up in front of the screen for first person view but I do like the "view of truth" idea. It would be great for a video game re-imagining of "They Live". Could also work for secret doorways or caves in walls. Also for the 3D view in a Super Paper Mario U sequel. I don't want to throw it like a disc or boomerang but it's obvious as a steering wheel or reins for Link's horse. Giddy up. It also better stream Netflix
