Sega's taking great care with Sonic's next mainline outing, Sonic Frontiers. Apart from making the tough decision to delay the release in order to "brush up the quality" of the title, it's also been added in additional features to make the experience more accessible to everyone.
As part of this, Sonic's new game will bolster its localisation offerings - with even more supported languages in both voiced and subtitle form. Here's the full rundown, courtesy of the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account. Note: * for Xbox and PC only.
Sonic social media manager, Katie Chrzanowski, further explained how a lot of internal teams within Sega "pushed hard" for all of the different localisation options and gave a shoutout to all the localisation teams while she was at it:
"Very grateful that we were able to add more languages this time around (also shoutout to localization teams — unsung heroes!)."
Sonic Frontiers will be released across multiple platforms - including the Nintendo Switch - in Holiday 2022.

thats...cool, I guess?
Why would the Switch version not have Korean or Chinese?
@ALinkttPresent You do realize there's only 3 games on the Chinese Switch eShop. The Switch version of Sonic Frontiers won't be release in China due to their ban on physical videogames over there thus why Sega only had sub for them in the digital PC and Xbox versions.

@ALinkttPresent you mean audio versions? Also the list of languages shown are for all platforms I think
@Specter_of-the_OLED might I remind you that the article you posted was from March 17th 2020. Clearly there are more than 3 games on the Chinese Eshop now
@anoyonmus everything with an * is for Xbox an PC only.
so korean, simplified and traditional chinese are Xbox/PC only.
They pushed hard but not hard enough to have the full list of available subtitles on every platform. Maybe Shelf-Man will brag about having exclusive subtitles.
@anoyonmus Okay maybe they add 10 more games to it thanks to 10 pennies over there but my point still stand true. Why would they need to add Chinese subs to a game that is likely won't be able to get eShop released there anyways?
@Nalverus I see
So they are doing their job? How does this warrant a story?
Not gonna lie, I'm a little surprised there's not a Dutch option. Not that I'd use it, but for some reason I had the idea that Sonic games had been translated to Dutch for some time now, before the Mario games even did it. Huh.
Ah well, I always use English anyway. Even with subtitles.
A trailer would be nice
I mean this isn't bad news, but it has me concerned they are pushing for a focus on dialogue. I love Sonic and the universe attached to it, but dialogue has never been it's strong point.
Love me some Italian dubbed games!
Why in the world would there be platform-exclusive language options???
I sometimes still think about team sonic and their years of experience
Well, the more people that can play the game, the better, I can’t really see a downside to that.
@bluemujika
Honestly, I don’t think it’s going to play that much of an impact. I think that the amount of cutscenes in, say, Sonic Colors would be enough to add more languages to, so we might get a little more than that. Personally, though, at least in my opinion, cheesy Sonic cutscenes are my jam.
Subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese are a BIG DEAL for brazilian players. I personally don't care, I play and run everything in English but I'm part of a minority here in Brazil.
Kudos to SEGA
It’s so weird that I’m excited for this. I normally can’t stand sonic. The game design clashes with the level design constantly but this is good. An open world game focused on speed? Absolutely genius.
@Specter_of-the_OLED The Chinese eShop might not have a lot of games, but I don't think that's not the reason why Chinese subtitles aren't coming to the Switch.
Nintendo, for example, localizes to Chinese games they haven't released in China.
I'm pretty sure they translate to Chinese for other markets. I mean, aren't games released in Taiwan primarily in Chinese? At least that's how I remember it from the late Wii days.
About Spanish (my mother tongue), I expect SEGA to continue using the European Spanish voices that use those weird expressions like "pringue", "chalado" or "bocata" that nobody uses in Mexico.
@HammerGalladeBro Exactly, and for Hong Kong. Furthermore, both Taiwan & HK are literally the regions Traditional Chinese is supported for - Simplified is predominantly for the mainland. Plus, all Pokémon games since Sun/Moon (iirc) have had Chinese options. ‘Lack of games on Chinese eShop’ is certainly not the reasoning here, especially when the Xbox, a console that has not sold anywhere near as well in China, IS getting support in both relevant languages.
This is just one of those absolutely baffling SEGA decisions that they’ll probably refuse to explain unless the issue is pushed.
Quote from Sega "We want to be full effect of the bugs and errors to be realized across all regions. We are committed to it"
@HammerGalladeBro Yes games released in Taiwan does had some Chinese language options in there but I don't think the Switch had any market appeal in Taiwan. Also I believe Tencent is the reason there won't be any Chinese language option on the Switch version as they don't want Chinese customers importing the game for play in China or importing the game from elsewhere to those in China as the Chinese government is still cracking on people who tries to violate the gaming banned. The reason for the banned is to prevent deaths due to game addiction as a result of long period of gaming sessions in China.
I love Nintendo with all my heart, after I broke up with sega when they moved out after the Dreamcast, Nintendo showed me a fantastic time. I will on the other hand have to buy this in my series x. After playing forces on Xbox one then rebuying it for switch I feel that is the way to go.
