Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie director Jeff Fowler is currently doing the press rounds this week to promote the sequel and as you can probably imagine, he's being asked all sorts of questions about what type of video game movie adaptation he would like to work on next.
Speaking to Comicbook.com, Jeff was asked if he would be interested in working on something to do with the Smash Bros. series if given the opportunity. While he's not so sure about getting the legal permissions required to make a crossover like this happen, he said he was still keen on the idea - noting how eager everyone probably was to see Mario and Sonic duke it out.
"Nothing would make me happier than to just throw all the characters into a battle royale and do a big Smash Bros. thing. That would probably require some work from the lawyers before that could happen...Getting Mario and Sonic in the ring, I mean everyone would be kinda dying for that, right? That's just classic."
While the whole idea of such a thing might seem like a pipe dream right now, who knows what could potentially happen in the future, as so many movie companies now want to recreate the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with other franchises.
Mario is also getting his very own animated movie later this year. It will star Chris Pratt as Mario and is being created by the team at Illumination (Despicable Me) with involvement from Mario's creator Shigeru Miyamoto. Would you be interested in a Smash Bros. movie? Leave a comment below.

Honestly, I wouldn’t care if it was good or bad, this would be a sight to see
I thought we already had a Smash Bros movie.
How would a smash bros movie even work? It's a fighting game with little to no story of it's own.
A Smash Bros. cinematic universe has enough name recognition to beat the MCU. They could definitely go for it.
We already have live-action Sonic and Pokemon, and Snake is on the way too.
Cute idea to entertain for a minute, but there's not enough there in a number of places to make a movie out of and too many details in others to properly represent the properties being used. To say nothing of the general idea here if Nintendo would even want to pursue this with more films is essentially what the DCEU infamously tried/is trying to do with their major event film more-or-less kicking off their connecting film universe. It, uh, didn't go down smoothly.
It frankly sounds more like the guy just wants to do a Super Mario versus Sonic flick. Which hey, is a lot more concise and straight-forward to pull off and the characters play off each other magnitudes better than trying to make something out of Smash Bros. which is why they've already done a number of crossover games between them. And the Olympics for reasons I never understood but whatever, the last ones in Japan were "hosted" by Goku, Sailor Moon and Luffy so eh.
That all said, if you made it like the Lego Movie being all meta and junk representing the first Smash Bros. just being some kid playing with his Nintendo toys out of his toy chest, I guess you can hobble something out of that.

As long as it wouldn’t be live action, that’s something I’m willing to see. How you would do it, I have no idea, maybe something based off of SE from brawl, and brawls story mode was really good I think.
Then there’s the trailers for fighters, it might be hard, but a movie could ended work. But again, it can’t be live action.
As long as it’s not live action I could die happy watching the movie

Might work if it was based on Subspace Emissary from SSB Brawl. That's the most story-heavy I've seen in Smash, besides possibly World of Light/Dark from SSB Ultimate.
Mario fights Kirby after Kirby (who everyone assumes is a mindless monster) is discovered eating people's pet dogs. But then Mario and Kirby become friends and team up to fight Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong who are working for an evil land developer (Waluigi) and plan to throw barrels of explosives at an orphanage. 🧐 Meanwhile Link falls into the city through a magical portal with no memories and fights everyone one by one in an attempt to discover who he is.

Personally, I think it should be a while before any potential Super Smash Bros. movie. Get some movie adaptations of Nintendo's other games out first (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, F-Zero, Mother, etc.) before a Super Smash Bros. movie.
That being said, I can totally imagine a Super Smash Bros. equivalent of the Avengers Assemble scene from Endgame. It could be Mario making a last stand alone against Master Hand, Crazy Hand, Tabuu, Galeem, or Dharkon, and then these portals start opening, with all the characters that were previously killed off joining the fight.
Meanwhile, Samus in her Power Suit does a superhero landing on the ground in front of Captain Falcon. And then Giga Bowser bursts out of the ruins of a building to release Donkey Kong and another character.
And then with everyone assembled, Mario says, "Smash Brothers!... brawl." Link lets out a battle cry, and then everyone charges the enemy forces, eventually emerging victorious.
I don't see how it would work, if it's just Nintendo characters that'll be okay but if you had to add third party characters to the film it'll probably be a license nightmare to make it happen. Then you also had to cook up a good story with those characters too and developed them beyond what Nintendo couldn't. If Nintendo doesn't allow it I could see why, if they do then good luck, he'll need all the support he could get and the fans will be ready. Both the ones who are excited for it and the ones with pitch forks and torches ready to tear and burn it down.
I’m sure Illumination is itching to make a Smash movie.
As for everyone saying you couldn’t make a Smash movie, clearly you never Ed played Subspace Emissary in Brawl.
That said, Sonic is only a very small part of Smash, and given that Paramount has the rights to Sonic, WB at least has the rights to Detectice Pikachu (though I’m doubtful that the Pokémon company actually gave away full movie rights the way Marvel did back in the day) I’m not sure what studio could possibly actually do the work. Realistically if Nintendo did do a Smash movie they could easily do the first one by themselves with a studio, after that you’d then go around to Sega and Square to get the rights for Sonic/Joker and Cloud/Hero/Sora… haha wait a second… if they wanted to do everyone is here they’d need to have Disney Animation involved due to Sora. And there’s no way that anyone is giving another massive franchise to Disney if they can help it. So you’d never get everyone there.
Realistically first Smash movie would have the Nintendo characters and maybe most of the third parties. But I suspect we’d see some random hold outs.
@DavidMac I definitely wouldn’t want third party’s first thing, it would be cool to get a build up, and who knows, maybe the movies could have the same hype as the games.

I always imagined in my head if this was to happen it would start with a little Mac movie. Where after his fight with a de-aged Mike Tyson he gets a letter at his gym with the smash stamp on the back. Yes, I think of this multiple times a day.
I'll be honest here
Movie format will NOT mesh well with Smash's concept AT ALL. Kinda relies on a LOT of audience's knowledge of every entry, and having enough time to introduce and flesh out all thise characters will lead to a situation like Marvels The Eternals. Even when stripped down significantly in size, there is too much to go through at once, and creating a plot that will interest all the characters as well as bring them into the same place is just kindaaaa

What? how on Earth would that even work? there's little to no story so how a movie can be made from this is just beyond me. Mind you a Tetris movie has been made so anything's possible.
Calling it now the mario movie is the start of the smash bros/nintendo cinematic universe. Make it not live action though and it would be awesome.

I mean that sounds neat, it has as much weight as any company saying they'd want their character in smash. We've already gotten story concepts like with subspace emissary and world of light so it's always fun to speculate
It might be years before we see that.
@VoidofLight If Scorpion and Johnny Cage have stories good enough for film, I’m sure they can at least match that for Nintendo’s characters
I would rather see him and Sega make movies based on their other IPs.
I would love to see a movie based on Golden Axe, Ristar, Streets of Rage, Shining Force, Phantasy Star, Kid Chameleon, Altered Beast, Gain Ground, Panzer Dragoon, and Nights just to name a few.

This would honestly only work if it were animated and not live action, I feel. But if they think they can pull it off AND get all the necessary green lights for it to make it, then I'd love to see it.
Why though? Because he genuinely has a good idea for one or because it's one of the biggest brands in video game and would likely draw a huge crowd regardless of the what it's about. Just wanting video game characters to fight seems a bit...empty for a film (not so much for a videogame.)
Hell yes!. Look to the anime WORLD WAR BLUE for inspiration. That series was great. Sadly never finished.
They have to make first the Mario movie, and then a Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, DK and Fire Emblem movies (Pokemon has enough), and then join them all in Smash Bros XD, a la Avengers.
@DavidMac Toho has Pokemon, Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest.
Toho also co-produced the Sonic movies and almost all Universal films, including Illumination's films.
Toho should make this Super Smash Bros. Cinematic Universe a real thing by working together with video game companies and Hollywood studios.
Imagine if Toho has five current cinematic universes:
Maybe they can even tie in the Tohoverse with the Shin Japan Heroes Universe and the MonsterVerse like how they somehow tied GODZILLA 1998 with GMK.
Still, I would be happiest if Toho brings together these video game companies to make a Super Smash Bros. Cinematic Universe. They are the last hope in making a Super Smash Bros. Cinematic Universe.
I would rather have a smashbros anime series, where every character has its own story, till the Smash tournament (battle for the multiverse) draws near.
With that setting you have a never ending plot lol.

OK, the Sonic movies are great, not going to deny that. But having the person who made them make a Smash movie seems.... wrong? I feel as though the director of a Smash movie should be someone who's movies tend to be more serious and emotional, you know? I wish I could give an example but I can't remember a director like that to save my life.
I really trust a movie director who has based this whole thing on game popularity because it's a crap idea for a film.

Getting all the rights for the whole roster would be hard and expensive work.
Well, on the bright side, it would likely be the first new thing from Nintendo to feature F-Zero.

I'm pretty sure in the instance of Mario duking it out with Sonic, I'd prefer controlling one of them instead of watching that fight.
In fact, when it comes to Smash Bros., I prefer to play than to watch.
I could say "not gonna happen", but those words were proven wrong multiple times in this timeline, so I'll just say it's unlikely.
It would be completely amazing if it did happen though.
They'd have to turn items off or else we'll have some deus ex machina ending.
I'm not against the concept, I think it would be really cool honestly, I'm just afraid that they'll mess it up. Nothing to do with director himself, I haven't seen the Sonic movie or his other work, just that the Smash Bros series has a certain level of prestege that I hope is maintained.
@AstroTheGamosian YES! I'd be totally on board with at least a Mother movie. Heck, I wish TellTale Games would remake some of the classic story-heavy JRPGs so there'd be condensed versions of the game for broader consumer appeal.
If they want to do a movie then I can only see it working with the roster from the original game. A series on the other hand with the roster size of WiiU and Ultimate akin to Justice League Unlimited could work if cards are played right.

@Denngar If you're talking about the original Telltale Games, they sadly went out of business three years ago. There is a company that bought their assets and IP and operate under the name Telltale Games as well, but the original Telltale Games is out of business.
@Marioman2022 I think Subspace Emissary would make more sense. It's story is more in-depth compared to World of Light's. Already, with the sheer amount of cutscenes in that game mode (compared to World of Light), it kind of is a movie already, similar to Metroid: Other M.
@AstroTheGamosian Oh, I know, and that's probably a good thing. I'd heard bad things about the old engine and how a higher-up made it and didn't want to redo it, so I'm hoping the new TellTale will be even better.
That's like Marvel's Infinity War but for Nintendo.
