Loved the Wii U but sadly the opportunity to enjoy it fully has passed if you never had one. Still, lots of great games on disc.

It's really rare to find a white Nintendo Wii U that still works properly.

Smart person, who knows how expensive they'll be once the nostalgia wave kicks in and it's hard to find these. Cool he got one new too

Somewhat relevant story: My family went on a road trip some months ago, and I said I wanted to check out a GameStop that I never went to before. Spotted a 3DS game that they were trying to sell as "new." The cashier said it was just sitting there for several years without anyone buying it if I recall. I was thinking about buying it, but obviously the condition of the 3DS case was in bad condition and was not "new" because they had the cartridge in their counter, so I pass on it. You would think they would put a clearance sale on it, but they seem to not bother about doing that.

Honestly if I saw a brand new sealed Wii U out in the wild at standard RRP I'd buy it. I loved my Wii U, as did most of the handful of us that actually bought one 😂 The value is likely to skyrocket as these become harder and harder to find in new condition.

It is obviously another person trying to 100% Super Mario Maker before April 2024.

I remember dashing out to pre order a Wii U

After the success of the Wii I assumed it would be the next big thing.

It seemed a great idea but in the end even Nintendo couldn't think of anything to do with that silly Game pad (with the exception of Mario maker)

I remember not being able to get one at launch, I had a pre order, but funny how things changesd so quickly for the system, that not even Mario 8 could save it.

Still selling better than Xboxes in Japan.

@johnvboy Very quickly! My wife bought a new one off eBay shortly after launch that was already £10 below RRP (there were dozens if I recall). Not really a promising sign!

I bought a second Xenoblade LE Wii U console when retailers were getting rid of them for cheap.
Still brand new unopened.

The one game that hasn't been brought over to Switch yet.

@Member_the_game I thought the gamepad had a lot of potential for inventory and maps. Surprised it hasn't been tried again with smart phone apps as an optional feature.

Would really like this for a number of RPGs and open world games.

That's just going to be a stock adjustment.

It was an overage that has been in the system for years (basically, someone overcounted or someone stole a unit that never going properly reported) that was resented removed.

The store would have absorbed the cost, making it a "sell through".

It definitely had the potential but I guess as it sold so poorly the 3rd party developers didn't feel it was worth their time and effort to utilise it.

Don't get me wrong Nintendo did pump out some fantastic games for the Wii U (majority of which have been ported to the Switch) but none of them really showcased how useful the game pad could be other than Mario Maker as I mentioned in my previous post.

If Nintendo couldn't think of ways to use it we can't really expect other developers to invest their time

At this rate of sales WiiU will be the number one console in the world around the time the sun expands and engulfs the earth

Actually I got a new system myself this year.
But it was a private buy from a person who had the system for several years, but never opened it.

The sad part of this story: This unit is likely on eBay now for a multiple price.

I never did get a Wii U, I suppose just as well, given the number of games ported over to the Nintendo Switch anyways.

I mean, it is currently the only way to legally play XCX. I think lots of people wanted to try that one after finishing up Future Redeemed.

I still play on Wii U, especially with friends. Nintendo Land and Game & Wario, those two alone are worth it. Fantastic party console.

@JayJ I don't agree that it has fully passed. There are a lot of great games on it, and I enjoyed the dual screen concept. Tokyo Mirage is great, and the NES remix games, and Splatoon (until the servers die)

I guess no one will be picking up any New 2DS XLs any time soon. They're so stable, that they literally cannot be picked up.

I got a new Nintendo 3ds in a drug store over the summer. They had one just sitting all shiny and new behind the counter haha.

In 98 or 99 I once found copies of Samurai Showdown and Virtua Fighter Animation on the Game Gear for $5 each at a K-Mart.

I reckon the seller said it was the new Nintendo system that he got early . And the buyer wondering how to play all his old switch games on. NEXT GEN has arrived.

But in all honesty i regular play my Wii U, but then I never bought a Switch.

Though I would like a New 3DS XL as my 2DS screen I find to small now. But people want mega bucks for used 3DSXL , its a crazy.

For those who can't boot their WU, there is a hardmod (hardware modification) to permanently fix the hardware responsible for this issue.

I’m actually playing sonic &all stars racing at the moment on my WiiU. It’s weird I turned it on after not touching it for a while and I’m looking at tropical freeze, captain toad etc thinking these games are so old now how the hell did Nintendo manage to sell them again as if they were new 🤯

@Baler It's the type of flash memory Nintendo packaged in the WU console. If it goes a long-term time without an electrical change going through it, the memory "decays" so to speak, and malfunctions. Aa a sidenote, all flash memory types suffer from similar weaknesses, though various types of ROM (read-only memory) are more resilient.

I never know how 'new' Wii U/3DS/PS4/Xbox Ones/Vitas are these days. For PS4 I get it the new ones exist. Xbox One they discontinued. But the rest are out of production or used/prewoned status I thought by now not NEW status unsold then the leftover 3DS well New 2DS XL systems in Japan that had few sales purchases of stock/labelling or whatever. But otherwise hmm.

I like the Wii U, what games it had, what potential it had, what it did do at least even if not in some areas but still good enough. I like dual screens/motion and it bridged DS/Wii as much as I can tell they could come up with for ideas and due to it's failure but still enjoyment of what was there.

Sure no Project Cars Wii U, no tweaks to the system in some way for GBA/manuals to work better then pausing the game, but either way it's fine. The games that weren't for it didn't bother me at all, either had them on other consoles or didn't care so I wasn't missing out on the ones I don't care about (aka many on PS4/Xbox One big hits as well of third parties) that most people play anyway.

I enjoyed the Indies, I didn't pick up the family audience third parties when I could if I see copies out there for Wii/Wii U but otherwise it is what it is. I mean if I can enjoy PSP Minis/mobile games, Nintendo first parties, Indies, virtual console and whatever else in it's current state still I'm good for Wii U.

@Baler I don't remember if only leaving it plugged in is a guaranteed prevention, or if you have to have played it frequently, and recently enough that it's not going to be a problem. I believe having it plugged in is sufficient to avoid the problem.

So I wonder if the standard warranty still applies on that
